Hollywood has been liberal for a much longer time than it was ever conservative, but the trend in filmmaking may be moving back to the right.
Although overshadowed by her traumatic personal life, Sandra Bullock’s nomination and 2010 Oscar award for her performance in the 2009 film, The Blind Side, put many Hollywood directors on notice that family-oriented films with realistic conservative narratives are an important new addition to the industry (see a review of The Blind Side). The film’s success also proved to film executives that quality conservative movies will draw audiences to the box office and may revive struggling DVD sales.
At the same time, a rising number of Hollywood actors and actresses are coming forward as conservatives, proud rather than ashamed of their political orientation.
Four-time Academy Award-winner Jon Voight recently appeared on the FOX News program, Huckabee, and read a letter scolding President Barack Obama for perpetrating a “cleverly-orchestrated” lie in front of the American people:
“The lie is a potent aggression that feeds the needs of people who have either not educated themselves enough to understand the assault upon us all or the very poor and needy who live to be taken care of,” Voight wrote. “President Obama feeds these people poison, giving them the idea that they’re entitled to take from the wealthier who have lived and worked in a democracy that understands that capitalism is the only truth that keeps a nation healthy and fed.”
Meanwhile, films like The Blind Side take a decidedly more subtle approach, offering audiences an emotional and stirring message on the importance of family values without being too politically over-the-top or preachy. Nevertheless, Bullock’s character of Leigh Ann Tuohy is portrayed vastly different than conservative heroines in previous films, while Quinton Aaron, who portrays the future all-star defensive lineman, Michael Oher, turns in an excellent performance, as does Kathy Bates. Bates stars as Oher’s tutor, who comes forward and admits to the Tennessee family that she’s — gulp — a Democrat.
It doesn’t matter to Touhy, who besides being a no-nonsense Southern lady, is also, clearly, a tolerant one who has had her eyes open to the darker side of life and simply wants to change it. Bullock’s amazing performance allows audiences to see a real-life woman worthy of admiration, one who bears a closer resemblance to the modern conservative woman than Hollywood would have ever admitted previously.
