{"id":1162,"date":"2013-02-09T09:29:52","date_gmt":"2013-02-09T14:29:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/patrioticfederalist.com\/wp\/?p=1162"},"modified":"2014-03-29T21:20:23","modified_gmt":"2014-03-30T03:20:23","slug":"howto-extend-shipping-entitlement-for-military-retirement-move","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/patrioticfederalist.com\/wp\/?p=1162","title":{"rendered":"How To Extend Shipping Entitlement For Military Retirement Move."},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>RETIREMENT SHIPPING EXTENSIONS<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.defensetravel.dod.mil\/Docs\/perdiem\/JFTR%28Ch1-10%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1187\" alt=\"Extension\" src=\"http:\/\/patrioticfederalist.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/JTR.jpg\" width=\"490\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"http:\/\/patrioticfederalist.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/JTR.jpg 816w, http:\/\/patrioticfederalist.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/JTR-300x174.jpg 300w, http:\/\/patrioticfederalist.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/JTR-500x291.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You must use your household goods move within one year of retirement or try for an extension.\u00a0 Extension are not guaranteed and are governed by\u00a0Joint Federal Travel Regulation (JFTR).\u00a0 Pertinent JFTR portions are attached as part of this article.\u00a0 If you need the latest JFTR then <a title=\"JFTR search\" href=\"http:\/\/lmgtfy.com\/?q=Joint+Federal+Travel+Regulation+(JFTR)\" target=\"_blank\">search for it on Google. <\/a>The image above is also link to the latest JFTR I could find.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">They can only give a one year extension at a time, then you would have to ask again in 11 months.\u00a0 I assumed this is so, if you forget about it, you will lose it and they don&#8217;t have to worry about you any more.\u00a0 Your thousands of dollars go back in the pot for use elsewhere.\u00a0 I recommend you set a few reminders in your smart phone or something similar so you don&#8217;t lose this benefit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You can get up to 5 extensions.\u00a0 This is the time limit to use the funds from the particular &#8220;pot&#8221; of money from which your move was to be paid.\u00a0 For an appeal beyond 5 years, see the Defense Office of Hearings and Appeals (<a title=\"DOHO\" href=\"http:\/\/patrioticfederalist.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/DOHA-APPEAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">DOHO<\/a>) for the address to write for you appeal.\u00a0 Use certified mail or they will ignore your letter and pretend they never received it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For the first 5 extensions, your letter should contain at least the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Name:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Rank:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">SSN:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Mailing Address:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Phone #s:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">E-mail Address:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Reason for Request for Extension (IAW the JFTR \u2013 please see below or attached)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Copy of Retirement Orders******<strong>Not the DD214<\/strong>******<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Signature:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I have attached my friends extension request.\u00a0 His was approved (USAF) for job searching.\u00a0 <a title=\"Extension Example\" href=\"http:\/\/patrioticfederalist.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/redacted2013ExtReq_Redacted.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Extension Request<\/a>.\u00a0 I stripped out some of the required information listed above so make sure yours includes that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><!--more--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The extension is not granted unless there is a reason as described in the JFTR.\u00a0 Searching for a job is a good reason.\u00a0 Keep records of your search.\u00a0 Apply for something every month and keep records.\u00a0 <a title=\"USAJOBS\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usajobs.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">USAJOBS.GOV,<\/a> for example, keeps all your job applications for up to a year. You can <a title=\"screenshot\" href=\"http:\/\/lmgtfy.com\/?q=simply+take+a+screen+shot\" target=\"_blank\">simply take a screen shot\u00a0<\/a> of your jobs applied for screen.\u00a0 For other job applications, keep emails (take screen shots) and scan any hard copies.\u00a0 The eventual goal is to put all that in one <a title=\"PDF\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usajobs.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">Adobe.PDF<\/a> file to send in for your extension.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Another item is timing on your application for extension.\u00a0 You have a year to use it, but if you need an extension DO NOT WAIT until one week before your year is up.\u00a0 If they need more information or something happens to go past your one year date, you may get denied.\u00a0 Start this process about a month out for the letter.\u00a0 Start saving records ASAP for whatever reasoning you will likely use under the JFTR.\u00a0 Once approved, you should receive a letter <a title=\"Approval Letter\" href=\"http:\/\/patrioticfederalist.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/ApprovalRedacted.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">like this one<\/a> via email.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The JFTR items you want to read are here:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The full document <a title=\"JFTR\" href=\"http:\/\/www.defensetravel.dod.mil\/pdc-archive\/reg-chgs\/monthly\/2010\/JFTR\/Change%20283%20%2807-01-10%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">JOINT FEDERAL TRAVEL REGULATIONS, VOLUME 1 (JFTR)-Change 283 \u2014 1 July 2010<\/a> , specifically section U5365.\u00a0 This is the latest version as of this posting so verify nothing has changed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">A more condensed explanation of the section you need is <a href=\"http:\/\/patrioticfederalist.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/PCSFaqretirement.pdf\">Here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPDATE:<\/strong>\u00a0 4\/1\/14 Quick list on justifications which may qualify you for an extension.<\/p>\n<p>*An official signed statement from the college\/university that you are attending indicating your degree program or course of instruction, the date the program began and your anticipated graduation date.<\/p>\n<p>*A copy of your initial VA rating, pending VA rating or if you are challenging the VA rating.<\/p>\n<p>*A signed document from a 3rd party, verifying one of the reasons (below) you are requesting this extension:<\/p>\n<p>-delay in selling, renovation or construction of retirement home (requires letter from realtor)<\/p>\n<p>-dependent child education (must be in the middle of school term or entering senior year in high school)<\/p>\n<p>-dependent child with special education (only those with learning disabilities)<\/p>\n<p>-spouse&#8217;s education (must be in the middle of school term or to complete final year<\/p>\n<p>-family member with severe illness (unexpected, serious\/terminal)<\/p>\n<p>-death in the family (immediate family, brother\/sister, parent-in-law)<\/p>\n<p>-spouse is active duty (Proof of service letter)<\/p>\n<p>-spouse is permanent civil service employee impacted by RIF action<\/p>\n<p>-retiree job search (must provide letters\/emails from employment agencies, perspective employers, etc.)<\/p>\n<p>-employment OCONUS (requires letter from employer)<\/p>\n<p>-legal\/administrative proceedings that preclude member from moving within time limits<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>RETIREMENT SHIPPING EXTENSIONS You must use your household goods move within one year of retirement or try for an extension.\u00a0 Extension are not guaranteed and are governed by\u00a0Joint Federal Travel Regulation (JFTR).\u00a0 Pertinent JFTR portions are attached as part of this article.\u00a0 If you need the latest JFTR then search for it on Google.
